Geography Around You: Introducing Geospatial Technology to Young Learners
The Takshashila Institution conducted an outreach session titled “Geography Around You” at Thapovan School, Bengaluru, led by Dr. Y. Nithiyanandam. The session introduced more than 100 students from Classes 6 to 10 to the rapidly evolving world of geospatial science and technology, using accessible examples and interactive activities to connect geography with technologies that are increasingly becoming part of everyday life.
The session explored how maps, satellites, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, location intelligence and emerging Indian initiatives such as DIGIPIN are changing the way we understand and interact with places. Through examples, stories and questions, Dr. Nithiyanandam introduced students to the ways in which geospatial technologies are used to understand locations, observe the Earth and solve real-world problems.
The interactive format encouraged students to participate, ask questions and explore how familiar ideas of geography are connected to rapidly evolving digital technologies. The discussion was designed to make complex concepts accessible to young learners while encouraging curiosity about the role of geospatial science in their everyday lives and future careers.
The session reflected Takshashila’s broader commitment to building geospatial awareness and capacity by engaging young minds early. By introducing students to the growing intersection of geography, technology and digital intelligence, the session highlighted how geography is transforming in the digital age and opened up new ways for students to think about the world around them.
