China’s Air Shield Opposite Ladakh

Mapping PLA surface-to-air missile sites reveals a deployment pattern that deserves closer attention.
Satellite imagery often reveals more when viewed collectively than in isolation. As we mapped the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) deployments opposite Ladakh using satellite imagery and a range of open sources, an interesting pattern began to emerge. Rather than appearing as a collection of isolated surface-to-air missile (SAM) batteries, these deployments seem to form the foundations of a broader and more deliberate regional air defence architecture. If this assessment is accurate, it carries important implications for how China intends to protect its military infrastructure and sustain operations along the western sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
We have currently identified eight permanent SAM sites across western Tibet and southern Xinjiang. Based on visible infrastructure and corroborating open-source assessments, these comprise five HQ-9 sites and three HQ-16 sites. The engagement arcs shown on the accompanying map represent the approximate ranges of the most commonly used A and B variants of these systems. They are intended only as a visual reference and should not be interpreted as precise operational coverage, which in reality depends on factors such as terrain, radar line-of-sight, target altitude, and the specific missile variant employed.

Even with these limitations, plotting the sites together reveals several notable trends. Large portions of their engagement envelopes overlap, suggesting that neighbouring batteries could potentially provide mutual support. Equally significant is their proximity to key military infrastructure, including airbases, logistics hubs, and major lines of communication. This distribution indicates that the sites are positioned to protect critical rear-area assets rather than merely defend individual forward positions.
Satellite imagery also reveals another recurring characteristic. Certain installations contain multiple prepared firing positions connected by internal road networks instead of a single launcher area. Such layouts indicate that these complexes were designed with mobility and survivability in mind, allowing launchers to relocate between prepared positions while remaining operational. Although imagery alone cannot confirm whether every position is occupied or active at any given time, the infrastructure itself reflects deliberate planning to complicate targeting and improve resilience.
Taken together, these observations demonstrate why it is useful to analyse the sites as a network rather than as individual batteries. Viewed independently, each installation provides only limited insight beyond its location. Viewed collectively, however, the pattern suggests an effort to establish a layered defensive posture centred on protecting permanent military infrastructure across western Tibet and southern Xinjiang. While satellite imagery alone cannot conclusively establish the existence of a fully integrated air defence network, the geographic distribution and infrastructure are consistent with such an objective.
Importantly, the most significant finding is not simply the identification of eight permanent SAM sites. Modern militaries routinely deploy long-range air defence systems to safeguard critical assets. What stands out instead is the apparent relationship between these deployments. Their spacing, overlapping engagement zones, and multiple prepared firing positions collectively suggest that they are intended to function as components of a broader defensive architecture rather than as isolated installations.
As additional imagery and supporting evidence become available, our understanding of this network will continue to evolve. For now, the emerging pattern itself deserves close attention. For military observers, the key question is no longer whether individual SAM batteries exist opposite Ladakh, but how they are integrated into China’s wider military posture. Tracking the expansion, connectivity, and evolution of this network will be increasingly important for understanding how the PLA intends to defend critical infrastructure, preserve operational freedom, and fight in an environment where integrated air and missile defence has become a defining feature of modern warfare.
