Arunachal Pradesh at Crossroads
Arunachal Pradesh (transl. “Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains”)
Arunachal Pradesh stands at a critical juncture, facing converging threats from local hazards, climate change, and transboundary disasters. With China’s announcement of construction of a mega dam in Tibet Autonomous Region, near Arunachal Pradesh, the urgency for India’s resilience measures has never been greater. However, given the region’s ecologically protected status and the complex task of building consensus with native communities, meaningful initiatives by the policymakers are yet to sprout. Geospatial technology offers a path forward: by mapping the region’s complex geography, it is possible to plan infrastructure that the landscape can sustain and monitor compensatory measures, protecting communities from catastrophic risks while unlocking new opportunities for the state itself.
