Devika Kher was quoted in an article with the Hindustan Times.Karnataka's recent announcement of farm loan waivers comes in light of strong unrest among farmers in the country. Many states are reeling under the drought which has necessitated such action across multiple states.While two-thirds of India's population relies on agriculture for its livelihood, the sector amounts for a mere 14% of the GDP. This reflects a growing divide between the rural and urban population.

Devika Kher, a policy analyst at Bengaluru-based think-tank Takshashila Institution, said it was a question of utilising revenue more productively. β€œIn the long term, the state government will have to think of a way of increasing revenue from agriculture.”
