Amidst the wide struggle to tackle demands and debt relief, as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are writing farmers’ loans off, Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister, said that the union government will not help foot the bill.

Following the statement, ThePrint, asked a round of experts in an effort to revisit the culture of farm loan waivers and the minimum support prices to tackle this ‘moral hazard’.

Aruna Urs, the farmer-at-large of the Takshashila Institution said:

Indian farmers are glorified prisoners. Firmly shackled to their fields, they have been indentured to produce food on the cheap for the rest to either relish the produce or on his plight, usually both. Annadata sukhibava.
