Today’s Key Developments
This space provides a daily brief tracking key developments in the West Asian conflict.
Geopolitics
Pakistan
- Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir was in contact “all night long” with US Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in an emergency diplomatic push ahead of Trump’s April 6 deadline.
- Pakistan proposed a 45-day ceasefire, tentatively dubbed the “Islamabad Accord,” to both the US and Iran. Drawn up by Egyptian, Pakistani, and Turkish mediators, the proposal calls for an immediate ceasefire and simultaneous reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, followed by 15–20 days to finalise a broader settlement, with final in-person talks to be held in Islamabad. The deal is expected to include Iranian commitments not to pursue nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets.
- Under the proposal’s structure, the initial understanding would be formalised as a memorandum of understanding, finalised electronically through Pakistan.
- Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Andrabi declined to confirm or deny the specific proposals, stating only that “we do not comment on these individual, specific incidents” and that the peace process was ongoing.
China
- Wang Yi spoke by telephone with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on April 5 at Lavrov’s request, exchanging views on the situation in the Middle East. Lavrov expressed deep concern over continued escalation and called for an immediate cessation of military operations and a return to the political and diplomatic track, with the UN Security Council playing a constructive role. Russia said it is willing to maintain close communication and coordination with China on de-escalation.
- Wang Yi stated that as permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia should uphold fairness on major issues of principle and strive for greater international support. He reaffirmed that the fundamental solution to the navigation issue in the Strait of Hormuz is an immediate ceasefire, and that China is willing to continue coordinating with Russia in the UNSC to de-escalate the situation and maintain regional peace and global security.
Global Systems
Energy & Supply Chains
- The IRGC struck energy and petrochemical facilities in the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Kuwait reported “severe material damage” and fires at several operating units, according to state energy firm Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. In the UAE, fires were reported at petrochemical facilities in Abu Dhabi, halting production after debris from intercepted Iranian drones fell onto industrial sites.
India
Economy
- Moody’s Ratings slashed India’s economic growth estimate for the current fiscal year to 6%, down from 6.8%, while projecting inflation to average 4.8% in FY27, up from 2.4% in FY26.
- Goldman Sachs trimmed its FY27 growth estimate from 6.4% to 5.9%, citing a “terms-of-trade drag” and disruption-driven shortages.
Defence & Security
Weapons Systems & Defence Tech
- The US has reportedly used 850 Tomahawk missiles in this campaign — the most used in a single campaign ever, and nearly 50% of the regional inventory. The Vertical Launch System cannot be reloaded at sea, meaning destroyers must now leave the combat zone to restock.
- Israeli strikes shifted to the Mahshahr Petrochemical Complex, utilising Spice standoff electro-optical and GPS-guided bombs.
War Tactics & Strategy
- Now in its sixth week, the US-Israel war with Iran has continued to see airstrikes and missile exchanges, with prominent targets including the Bushehr nuclear power plant, the Mahshahr petrochemical zone, Tel Aviv, and Haifa. Trump’s latest rhetoric includes threatening Iran’s power grid, bridges, and power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz is opened before the April 7 deadline. Iran has rejected the demands, calling them incitement to war crimes.
- The build-up and events surrounding the successful combat rescue of a downed weapons systems officer points toward a large air campaign or ground offensive, with Iran potentially facing nationwide blackouts if US coercive bargaining fails to produce results.
