Today’s Key Developments

This space provides a daily brief tracking key developments in the West Asian conflict.

Geopolitics

Strait of Hormuz

  • Multiple Indian cargo ships are moving in groups from the Persian Gulf through Oman’s territorial waters, including MSV Al Shirazi, Faizane Mustafa 2201, Haji Ghasediya, MSV Alhamdulillah, Al Salima MNV 2190, and MSV Al Jusufi. The vessels appear to be using Oman’s territorial waters as an alternative corridor.
  • The Indian LPG tanker Green Sanvi successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz on the night of April 3, carrying approximately 46,650 metric tonnes of LPG. The vessel was escorted by an Indian warship. Different vessel types appear to be using different transit routes through and around the strait.

Global Systems

Energy & Supply Chains

  • During a two-day visit, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov confirmed the capacity of Russian companies to consistently increase supplies of oil and liquefied natural gas to the Indian market.
  • India is seeking direct procurement of nitrogen-based and phosphatic fertilisers, and is in discussions with Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Algeria, and Egypt for supplies of urea and di-ammonium phosphate (DAP).
  • The Special Petrochemical Zone of Mahshahr in southwestern Iran was reportedly targeted by US-Israeli strikes. Iranian media reported that explosions occurred at the site, affecting multiple companies in the area.

Defence & Security

Weapons Systems & Defence Tech

  • Iran shot down a US fixed-wing aircraft over central Iranian territory. Iranian state media and IRGC sources claimed the aircraft was an F-35 stealth fighter, describing it as a breakthrough against fifth-generation stealth technology. The US subsequently identified the aircraft as an F-15E Strike Eagle, with debris photos showing tail codes and vertical stabiliser geometry consistent with the 48th Fighter Wing from RAF Lakenheath. Military analysts note that regardless of the specific airframe, the incident suggests Iran may be using advanced thermal detection (IRST) systems to target high-altitude aircraft.
  • One crew member from the aircraft was reportedly rescued; the second crew member’s whereabouts remain unknown. A Black Hawk helicopter participating in the rescue mission was also hit but managed to return to base.
  • US-Israeli strikes destroyed the B-1 bridge in an attempt to sever logistics between Tehran and Iran’s western provinces, resulting in multiple civilian casualties.

War Tactics & Strategy

  • US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth asked General Randy George, the Army Chief of Staff, to step down. Senior army officials reportedly had no prior warning of the decision, which is widely attributed to friction between General George and the Trump administration over the next phase of the war.
  • Iran rejected the US-proposed 48-hour ceasefire.
