Mixed Signals : Divergent Lines

Authors

The fourth week of the Middle East War has witnessed divergent signals from Iran, Israel and US targeting domestic and regional perceptions, market manipulation to reduce volatility & control of oil pricing. While Israel has focussed on its ground pursuit of Hezbollah across its Northern borders, its targeting of South pars has been an act of considerable escalation.

The US appears to have still not worked out a clear military objective & Lines of Effort thereof. The immediate purpose & priority appears to be opening the Strait of Hormuz for regular traffic. Israel’s methodology of the present conflict signalling & engagement, points towards achieving a failed Iranian state in the neighborhood & annihilation of its proxies. Iran’s response has been aimed at its resistance & survival through actions against the Gulf allies of the US, forcing a broader conflict mosaic at a considerable economic cost to each. A classic Force on Space manoeuvre to counter the huge military asymmetry.

POTUS has announced a strategic pause in US prosecution of war, providing an Off ramp window for Negotiations. The US president has also supposedly received an offer from Iran which potentially points towards his willingness for a ceasefire. Egypt, Turkey & Pakistan have stepped in as potential intermediaries much to the dislike of Saudi Arabia & Israel who appear to want the military actions to continue, each for reasons of their own. Iran has tried to showcase its military endurance & leverage its hold on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic achilles heel.

The present war has already stretched the economic threshold of the world without any tangible gains to any. The human & material cost of this adventurism has been enormous. There now appears to be reasonable ground for mediation to kick start. Declaring victory, counting gains, forcing acceptance & gaining concessions are logical in the scheme of things to follow.
