Guru Aiyar Participates in a Panel Discussion on AFSPA

Guru Aiyar, Research Fellow at Takshashila, participated in a panel discussion organised at the Mount Carmel College titled AFSPA – A Blot on Indian democracy on 15 September 2016.

The panel featured experts in the field such as R.K. Mattoo, Senior Journalist, and Chairman, Kashmiri Hindu Cultural Welfare Trust, Bangalore, Tejasvi Surya, Advocate at High Court of Karnataka, and others.

The Armed Forces Special Powers Acts (AFSPA), grants special powers to Indian Armed Forces and security agencies in areas classified as ‘disturbed areas’ due to the breakdown of law and order. This has been a subject of nationwide debate for decades. The participants of the discussion brought forth the pros and cons with respect to AFSPA and potential measures for a peaceful resolution.
