Today’s Key Developments

This space provides a daily brief tracking key developments in the West Asian conflict.

Geopolitics

Pakistan

  • Pakistan confirmed that it has been acting as a middleman between Iran and the US, relaying messages between them. Pakistan’s former ambassador to Iran, Asif Durrani, described the role as “flattering” and “an endorsement of Pakistan’s efforts.”
  • Pakistan’s former US ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani warned that Israel’s actions could be a “spoiler” for any potential talks in Islamabad.

China

  • China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning officially announced the five-point plan agreed between China and Pakistan on March 31, summarised as “one cessation, two talks, and three guarantees”: immediately halting hostilities; initiating peace talks as soon as possible; ensuring the safety of non-military targets; ensuring the safety of shipping lanes; and ensuring the primacy of the UN Charter.
  • Mao stated that Beijing is fully committed to sharing the mediation burden with Islamabad, and that China and Pakistan, as important countries in the Global South, are issuing “rational and just calls to action” in the hope of fostering greater consensus within the international community. The initiative is open and welcomes participation from all countries and international organisations.

Global Systems

Energy & Supply Chains

  • Several Asian countries are turning to coal power in response to the energy crisis. South Korea plans to delay the closure of its coal-fired power plants and has removed limits on coal-generated electricity. Thailand has increased output at its largest coal-fired facility. The Philippines, which has declared a national energy emergency, intends to boost operations at its coal-fired power plants.
  • Of the nearly 30 billion cubic metres of LNG removed from global supply chains, the Indo-Pacific region accounts for over 80% of this missing volume.
  • Brent crude briefly traded below $100 per barrel before returning to $106 per barrel.

Diaspora

  • The death toll of Indians in Kuwait has climbed to eight, with one person still missing. Airspace remains closed and the MEA is stepping up support.

Defence & Security

Weapons Systems & Defence Tech

  • The Pentagon released a fact sheet confirming that over 13,000 combat flights have been conducted since February 28.
  • The US intensified its use of LUCAS drones — low-cost uncrewed combat attack systems designed based on Iranian Shahed drones.
  • US reports claimed the destruction of over 155 Iranian naval vessels.

War Tactics & Strategy

  • The conflict has possibly entered a decisive phase, with President Trump announcing war termination in two to three weeks. Intensified strikes from both sides have continued nonetheless.
  • The Houthis have opened a second front in support of Iran, with missile and drone strikes on sensitive Israeli sites to the south, adding another layer of complexity to the conflict.
  • A partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues, and Iran has stated its reluctance to negotiate with the US. Marines aboard USS Tripoli are now under the command of US CENTCOM in the Indian Ocean. The option of using land forces for time-limited specialised operations to break the present deadlock is a strategy anticipated to unfold.
