Geopolitics

Strait of Hormuz

  • US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran, posting on social media: “If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST.” He did not specify which plant he was referring to.
  • The ultimatum came hours after Trump had floated “winding down” the war. Iran responded by saying it would target all US energy infrastructure in the region if its own fuel and energy infrastructure were struck.
  • Trump separately said Iran wants to make a deal, but that he does not, claiming the US has met its goals “weeks ahead of schedule.”

Defence & Security

Weapons Systems & Defence Tech

  • Iranian ballistic missiles broke through Israeli air defences in southern Israel, reportedly targeting the cities of Dimona and Arad near Israel’s main nuclear research centre; the attack wounded over 100 people. The IRGC said it targeted military installations and security centres across Arad, Dimona, Eilat, Beersheba, and Kiryat Gat.
  • The IAEA said it was aware of the Dimona impact and noted no indications of damage to the Negev nuclear research centre.
  • Air defences in Saudi Arabia tracked three ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh, intercepting one; the other two fell in an uninhabited area. Six Iranian drones headed toward the kingdom’s eastern region, home to major oil installations, were also shot down.
  • Israel launched new attacks on Tehran, with explosions reported in the east of the city. Iran’s military said its air defences intercepted a US-Israeli armed drone over Tehran. The IRGC also claimed to have shot down an Israeli fighter jet in Iranian airspace; this marks the third such claim during the war.
  • Mediation efforts by Oman and others have stalled, with neither side showing willingness to enter talks.

War Tactics & Strategy

  • US CENTCOM confirmed it has struck 8,000 Iranian targets since the war began on February 28. Iranian missile and drone attacks are down 90% from the early days of the war, according to the US Department of Defence.
