Today’s Key Developments

Iran intensified its retaliatory campaign by striking additional Gulf energy infrastructure, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan and UAE’s Habshan hubs, and extending attacks to Kuwait’s refineries. This sent Brent crude soaring past $119. Israel marked a historic expansion of the war by striking Iranian naval targets in the Caspian Sea. The US claimed that its sustained campaign has now struck over 7,000 targets.

India

Foreign Policy & Neighbourhood

  • India officially condemned the strikes on Gulf energy installations, calling them “unacceptable.”
  • MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely hit India’s energy supplies, and warned that the latest strikes on Qatar will further disrupt LNG imports.
  • The MEA confirmed that Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives have requested India’s assistance in battling the global energy crisis.

Geopolitics

Strait of Hormuz

  • Iran has maintained the blockade of the strait since March 2; shipping data shows a 95% decrease in crossings.
  • Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the Netherlands issued a joint statement demanding a reopening of the strait and expressing readiness to support efforts for safe passage.

The United States

  • Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth claimed US strikes have reduced Iranian ballistic missile attacks by 90%, and stated that the US has destroyed over 120 Iranian ships and all 11 of its submarines.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested the US might temporarily lift sanctions on Iranian oil at sea to help lower global prices.
  • The Pentagon confirmed using 5,000-pound penetrator bombs against underground Iranian missile storage facilities.

Pakistan

  • Despite previous claims about Islamabad’s willingness to comply with mediation efforts, Pakistani forces fired artillery shells into Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

China

  • China offered Taiwan “energy security” and a stable power grid in exchange for unification. The offer was flatly rejected by Taipei as “cognitive warfare.”

Economy

Markets

  • The Sensex plunged by over 2,500 points, losing Rs 12.5 lakh crore in investor wealth — the worst energy-driven crash since the 1970s.

The Oil and Gas Crisis

  • India is aggressively sourcing crude oil from Russia. To counter the Hormuz blockade on other fronts, it is exploring sourcing fertiliser from Morocco and Jordan.
  • The Petroleum Ministry stated no LPG distributor is currently facing a “dry-out,” yet IGL reported 22,000 new registrations for piped gas in Delhi-NCR in just 15 days as consumers panic over potential cylinder shortages.

Diaspora

  • The MEA said its control room remains fully functional; the number of calls or emails asking for support has reduced significantly, potentially due to communication disruptions in conflict zones.
  • Since February 28, nearly 2.44 lakh Indian citizens have returned to India. Around 65–70 flights are operating from the UAE on a daily basis; Oman remains open for commercial flights, and Qatar partially so. In Bahrain and Iraq, travel is being facilitated via Saudi Arabia.
  • According to the MEA, a total of five Indians have lost their lives in the conflict so far, with one still missing.
  • 650 people and 284 pilgrims have crossed from Iran into Armenia and Azerbaijan to fly back to India.

Defence & Security

Weapons Systems & Defence Tech

  • The Israel Air Force (IAF) struck the Iranian naval shipyard and vessels in the Caspian Sea, hitting missile ships and command centres.
  • Iran launched its 64th wave of “Operation True Promise 4,” using cluster and multi-segment warheads to saturate Israeli air defences, damaging a refinery in Haifa and the northern electricity grid.

War Tactics & Strategy

  • The sheer volume of drones deployed by the IRGC, as well as naval mines, continues to make reopening the Strait of Hormuz extremely difficult.
  • The Pentagon announced it is launching its “largest strike package yet,” targeting the Iranian defence industrial base and production lines.

Key Leaders Killed in the West Asian War

Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib was confirmed killed in earlier strikes. On March 19, burial rites concluded for SNSC Secretary Ali Larijani, whose death in a Tehran strike (along with his son and the Basij chief) was officially confirmed by the Iranian government on March 17.
