The Takshashila PLA Insight: Issue no 15: China’s Hypersonic Boost Glide Missiles, PLA and Hong Kong, SCS Cyber Dimension, Type 001A, PLA’s Electronic and Cyber War

China has started mass production of Yun Feng Zhongcheng, a hypersonic surface to surface cruise missile. The missile has a range of 1500-2000 km. Chinese Academy of Science ‘Qingtian Project Room’ (青田项目室) is responsible for the research and development, and mass production of this missile.

The Yun Feng medium-range missile is different from the typical ballistic and cruise missiles. It appears to be a hypersonic boost glide missile that uses four tian-gong solid-fuel rocket booster propellers and a scramjet engine. The ignition is done using liquid mixed fuel as the power source for the hypersonic cruise.

Put simply, the Yun Feng launches like a ballistic missile but is converted into a medium-range glider or “cruise” missile in the second stage. It reportedly reaches hypersonic speed of Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound. The manoeuvring capabilities and high speed of the missile make it difficult to detect.
