The Takshashila Institution hosted an informal discussion with Mr. Shyam Saran, former foreign secretary, on Friday, 29 September 2017.
The topic of the discussion was India’s statecraft in the new world order. Lt Gen Prakash Menon chaired the discussion.
Mr Saran said that China will present an immediate and long-term strategic challenge to India. In such a case, India should build countervailing coalitions in various dimensions with all countries (including China) in a way that expands its foreign policy alternatives.
He also stressed on the fact that India’s civilisational attributes, honed over centuries, thanks to its cosmopolitan culture, can help it deal with the negative, divisive trends sweeping country after country today.
