Three things politics must do for Indian society
For democracy to truly succeed in India, our politics must endeavour to fulfill the following purposes in our society:
1. Safeguard individual liberty, so that each one of us has a freedom of choice
2. Ensure security, both physical and social, by promoting the rule of law
3. Expand economic opportunity, mostly through private initiative but via limited public intervention in exceptional cases
Each of these is a major complex task by itself but our politics needs to be viewed through this framework, and not merely through the media coverage of electoral, party and power politics. This politics can form the basis of a society which can produce an India of the future we would all like to see—strong, just and developed.
