The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had an eventful 2020. It was involved in skirmishes and stand-offs on multiple peripheries throughout the year. In particular, 2020 has been the first major test of China’s capacity for large-scale military deployment and national defence mobilisation since military reforms. Most importantly, it marked the PLA’s deadline to achieve mechanisation and move towards informatisation by 2035.
